Tips

How to choose a university in England

Before making your decision, research rankings, location and costs. Here are 5 key considerations.

Look beyond overall rankings - subject-level tables reveal a university's true strengths. Southampton, for example, ranks 13th in the world for Nursing, 33rd for Oceanography and has three REF subject areas rated 100% world-leading. A strong research environment means access to leading academics and cutting-edge facilities.
Consider the city, its transport links and lifestyle. Southampton is a vibrant coastal city with its own international airport just minutes from campus, direct trains to London in 70 minutes and a lower cost of living than the capital. Proximity to the New Forest and the Jurassic Coast is a bonus for students who value the outdoors.
Request a complete breakdown of all costs: tuition, accommodation, meals, insurance and travel. Living costs vary dramatically between cities. Southampton offers a range of university-managed accommodation and a cost of living notably lower than London, making it one of the better-value Russell Group universities.
Investigate a university's employer partnerships and placement opportunities. Southampton has strong ties to industries including engineering, technology, marine sciences and healthcare. Its SETsquared business incubator is ranked #1 globally, and 96% of graduates are employed or in further study within 15 months.
Seek advice from consultants who know universities from first-hand experience, not marketing brochures. A professional education consultant visits campuses regularly and provides objective, unbiased recommendations tailored to your academic goals and personal preferences.

Reviews

Reviews of the University of Southampton

MARYADI made the entire UCAS process straightforward. They recommended Southampton for Computer Science and it was the perfect choice - the ECS department is world-class, and studying where Tim Berners-Lee teaches is genuinely inspiring. The campus feels like a park, which was a pleasant surprise.

Wendy P. Computer Science student

We were deciding between London and Southampton for our son's engineering degree. MARYADI showed us around the Boldrewood Campus and the wind tunnel facilities - we were instantly convinced. The quality of the labs rivals anything in London, but the city is safer, greener and far more affordable.

Timothy & Philippa T. parents of a Mechanical Engineering student

The Hartley Library is open 24/7 and the campus is beautiful - right next to Southampton Common. I love being near the coast and the airport is incredibly close. MARYADI helped with everything from personal statement to accommodation, making the whole transition from abroad remarkably smooth.
